So, the authors of the new paper set out to examine whether or not altering the gut bacteria using an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/10278.php\" title=\"What to know about antibiotics\">antibiotic<\/a>&nbsp;can modulate the anticancer effects of radiation therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Facciabene, Ph.D. &mdash; an associate professor of radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania&#8217;s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia &mdash; is the senior investigator behind the new research, the results of which appear in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jci.org\/articles\/view\/124332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of Clinical Investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Antibiotic boosts radiation therapy&#8217;s effects<\/h2>\n<p>Facciabene and colleagues chose vancomycin as the antibiotic to disrupt mice&#8217;s gut bacteria because it triggers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/gram-positive-bacteria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gram-positive bacteria<\/a>, and because its action is limited to the gut. This means that it does not affect the rest of the body&#8217;s microbiome.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers administered the antibiotic orally to mice that had been genetically modified to develop lung cancer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/154322.php\" title=\"What to know about melanoma\">melanoma<\/a>, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/159821.php\" title=\"What you need to know about cervical cancer\">cervical cancer<\/a>. After administering the antibiotic, the team gave the mice hypofractionated therapy.<\/p>\n<p>These experiments revealed that vancomycin enhanced the antitumor effects of radiation therapy. It helped the treatment kill off not only the cancer cells that it targeted directly, but also the distant cancer cells that were farther away in the body.<\/p>\n<div id=\"threequarter-of-article\"><\/div>\n<p>This occurred by improving the function of dendritic cells. These cells act as the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.immunology.org\/public-information\/bitesized-immunology\/cells\/dendritic-cells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sentinels<\/a>&#8221; of the immune system, telling T cells that an antigen is present and asking them to attack it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our study shows that vancomycin seems to boost the effect of the hypofractionated radiation itself on the targeted tumor site while also aiding the abscopal effect, helping the immune system fight tumors away from the treatment site,&#8221; explains Facciabene.<\/p>\n<p>It is &#8220;clear [&#8230;] that antibiotics play a role and can potentially impact treatments and outcomes for cancer patients,&#8221; adds Facciabene.
