{"id":17271,"date":"2021-02-17T11:15:56","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T11:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opa.org.uk\/sample-page\/opa-shoulder-and-postural-exercises\/"},"modified":"2021-03-18T16:35:45","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T16:35:45","slug":"opa-shoulder-and-postural-exercises","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/opa-old.voidappsdev.uk\/?page_id=17271","title":{"rendered":"OPA Shoulder and Postural Exercises"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Shoulder and Postural Exercises \/ Advice following Thoracic Surgery<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Shoulder<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do not keep the shoulder still following surgery<\/li>\n<li>It is normal to experience shoulder stiffness and limitation of movement<\/li>\n<li>Start gentle movements immediately within your pain limits<\/li>\n<li>Lift arm both forwards and to the side<\/li>\n<li>Try to touch your fingers to the back of your head\/neck<\/li>\n<li>Touch fingers to the top of your shoulder and circle your elbow<\/li>\n<li>These exercises should be repeated regularly throughout the day<\/li>\n<li>The pain and stiffness will gradually ease<\/li>\n<li>Keeping the joint still may lead to a frozen shoulder&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Posture<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You may find it painful to sit\/stand up straight following surgery, this normal<\/li>\n<li>Do not be tempted to sit &lsquo;curled up&rsquo;, try to straighten out<\/li>\n<li>Try to raise the arm of the operated side over your head, this will stretch out the side<\/li>\n<li>In standing gently reach the opposite hand down the outer thigh, this will also stretch out the side<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining a poor posture may lead to permanent shortening in the wound as it heals<\/li>\n<li>Associated problems may include back and neck ache<\/li>\n<li>Gentle exercising will keep the joints and muscles at their correct length thus preventing these problems<\/li>\n<li>The exercised may well feel uncomfortable, do after painkillers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>&copy;
